As part of the Waveney Revels
celebrations on Friday 4th April Wrentham Band held an evening of
easy-listening and popular music at Lowestoft’s prestigious Marina Theatre.
We have not performed at The Marina for many years and we thank Andrew
Kitchen the Waveney Revels events organiser and Martin Halliday and Lester
Sayer of the Marina Theatre management together with their staff all of whom
have been extremely helpful and co-operative throughout.
Thanks are also due to the Friends
of Wrentham Band and all those who supported us by attending. The band
worked hard for this event to be a success and we hope that everyone enjoyed
the entertainment.
The evening started with the march
‘Barnard Castle’ by Goff Richards followed by the suite ‘English Folk Songs’
composed by Vaughan Williams. Delibes’ Flower Song featured Alan Sealey and
Debbie Mather in a beautiful cornet duet. A selection of music from the
film Cabaret was next and, still in film music mood, Let’s Face the Music
and Dance and the haunting Theme from Schindlers List followed. The Freddie
Mercury/ Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody ended the first half.
Army of the Nile, one of the many
marches by the British march King Kenneth J. Alford, settled the audience
down after the interval and this was contrasted by a brass band arrangement
of the popular Welsh melody All Through the Night. Then Rosie Carter and
Craig Gosling played the well-known tune Deep Inside the Sacred Temple from
The Pearl Fishers as a euphonium duet. Film music made more appearances in
the programme with Clog Dance (from Brassed Off) and a selection from Harry
Potter and the Philosophers Stone. The Irish Blessing followed leading up
to the finale; a selection from Slaughter on 10th Avenue. As an
encore the band performed an up-beat version of There’s No Business Like
Show Business.
Just a glance though the above
programme will show that brass bands have come a long way since the ‘cloth
caps with ferrets down trousers’ image. Nowadays we can, and do, play many
different types of music. We are working hard to raise our profile and
recruit more players – so if you play a brass instrument or percussion, wish
to hire the band or seek information on our future engagements please
contact me or visit our website.
